In this world, a boy named Aelo is raised on silence by a guardian named Jalo, whose every lie is an act of love. They are hunted by The Knife, an assassin who carries a wooden box of five beautiful objects as the only proof he was ever a person. He was sent by King Varas — a ruler born deaf to the Song in a world where everything sings, who has spent seventy years draining others' memories to fill his silence.

The magic system features seven disciplines, each a different way of hearing the world's memory, and each exacting an irreversible personal cost:
